I’ve been a member of a service called Book of The Month Club for a number of years, simply because I enjoy discovering new books and authors. Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor is one of the books that has come across my desk in that time. And while it is not a new book on shelves currently, there is a sequel to it. That is why I waited so long to do the review for this book, I was hoping it was just the first book in at least a trilogy.
Luckily for me, it turned out to have a sequel of sorts. The Goblin Emperor is actually more of an unconventional prequel. It acts as more of an introduction to the world for the series that spins off after it.
In this tale, we meet a goblin who becomes emperor over an elven empire after his father and all the heirs ahead of him are killed. We also meet the character, who has a series spin off from this, who investigates that death for him. And yes I am being vague in purpose to avoid spoilers.
Katherine Addison does a wonderful job grabbing your attention and immersing you in this world. It leaves one wanting more, even as it gives a nice conclusion. It’s like how a favorite TV series can have a finale yet still can be added to if they choose to. Whether you are just enjoying the world or relating to how you would feel if unexpectedly thrown into the shoes of being a ruler, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Even a mystery in the midst of it all. Yet, it is done without throwing too much at the reader at once at any given time unless the main character is meant to feel that way.
This is one of those must reads for anyone who is fan of fantasy such as Harry Potter, though not as lighthearted as that series could be at times. But just as well written and immersive. I give this 5 stars out of 5 stars.
Now, if you’ll excuse me I have a sequel of sorts to read.
