Friday Favorites: Side Characters

By: Stephanie Wyatt

I know, I know. Side characters aren’t compelling enough to be main characters; that’s why they aren’t main characters. Hear me out though. Haven’t you ever had a side character in a book that you just felt like you could be roommates with them? Couldn’t you just picture taking them to Wal-Mart and arguing over what kind of pizza to get? This is a list of a few of my favorite side characters, whom I would literally enjoy reading about going through their closet because I love them so much.

Marauders (Harry Potter)

I have been obsessed with the Marauders since I read Prisoner of Azkaban. I have been literally begging for a prequel series about Harry’s parents’ time at Hogwarts since the series ended. I was so excited when I found out that the era is a very popular fan fiction topic. I always wanted to see their pranks because they were supposedly even better than Fred and George Weasley. I always loved the fact that they were smart, good at school, and hilarious. I wanted to see how Voldemort rose to power the first time and life right after Hogwarts. I want to see a Hogwarts graduation and searching through the classified section in the Daily Prophet for jobs.

The Inner Circle (A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas)

I love reading about different group dynamics. I can just see this group turning a 2-hour movie date into an ordeal that lasts until dawn because they couldn’t agree on a movie as a group. Someone would eat all of the snacks, and I just imagine the actual movie choice being decided over a series of drinking games. It would make me so happy.

Uncle Iroh (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

I know this isn’t a book series, but I’m currently re-watching it on Netflix with my roommate, and I have a new found appreciation for Uncle Iroh. He would be the best roommate. You’re having a bad day? Uncle Iroh would just make you tea, and listen to your problems. He enjoys food, so even if you aren’t the best cook, he would still thank you for cooking dinner.

Felicity Smoak (Arrow)

I have loved Felicity since she appeared in the first season. I have always been fascinated by people who are hackers. She could delete my student loan debt. I’m sure during this pandemic, she would clean out some millionaires’ off shore bank account and use it to pay people’s rent who are in danger of being evicted due to the fact they can’t pay. She also seems like she would be fun to hang out with on a Saturday night at home.

Who are your favorite side characters? Do you imagine what it would be like if they were in your life? Let me know in the comments.
