Mythical creatures are my favorite part of the fantasy genre. I always appreciated that the different creatures existed in normal places if I just went looking for them. So, here are my favorite mythical creatures and the place I fell in love with them.
10. Elves
Okay, it’s December so I can talk about it, but I feel like if you don’t have elves on your list in December, then you are just asking to be put on the Naughty list. Besides that though, one of my favorite characters since I was a teenager has been Arwen from Lord of The Rings by J.R.R Tolkien.
9. Vampires
Vampires have been written about a lot in recent years. I appreciate the variety between the different worlds. My favorite vampires are probably from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and Jessica’s Guide to Dating on The Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey.
8. Leprechauns
I’m going to be honest, Leprechauns scared me as a child until I watched Luck of the Irish on Disney Channel as a kid. It’s on Disney Plus now, so go watch it after reading this post.
7. Werewolves
Remus Lupin has always been a favorite character of mine. Also, Luke Garroway from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.
6. Nymphs
Wood Nymphs are super connected with nature. I feel like they can be described as the drunk girls of the mythical world. I appreciate that they are always happy and love to dance. They’ve been in Charmed.
5. Phoenix
I always thought they were cool. I also like the fact they are literally reborn from their own ashes. Fawkes from Harry Potter is really the only one I know, but he’s still awesome.
4. Fairies
I feel like fairies are the new popular thing to write about since vampires have been kind of played out. I have loved reading the different lore in the various different novels. Some authors with awesome fairy books are Sarah J Maas and Melissa Marr.
3. Pegasus
Okay, I wasn’t really a unicorn person as a child. I love horses, so I always wanted a horse that could fly. My favorite is obviously Pegasus from Hercules. He makes me laugh.
2. Mermaids
I always related to Ariel from The Little Mermaid as a kid because I loved to learn and couldn’t go out a lot. I like the fact that mermaids can lure sailors to them with just their voices. I also feel like there isn’t much written about them. I am determined to prove one of my old professors wrong that there is no such thing as a sexy mermaid.
1. Dragons
I love dragons! Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon is one of my favorite magical creatures. I feel like if something has dragons in it, it’s guaranteed to have an epic adventure. I also like how loyal they are to their chosen people.
