Friday Favorites: Books of 2020

By: Cait Marie

All right, it’s time! I finished 91 books in 2020, and now I need to narrow it down to my top ten… which is impossible, but I shall try! Some series are going to be included as one because all the books were fantastic and I don’t want multiple books from the same series on the list.

10. Rent a Boyfriend – Gloria Chao

I listened to this audiobook on a whim because I needed something light and it looked cute. Now, I’m in love with this author. I immediately listened to American Panda afterward and adored it as well. This story was so moving, but it was still had the lightness I wanted. I already have another of her audiobooks cued up!!

9. A Curse of Gold – Annie Sullivan

For the third year in a row, Annie has made the top ten list! A Touch of Gold was #1 back in 2018, so I was super excited for this sequel. And it did not disappointment! I loved being back in this world with these characters (I still love Royce with all my heart) and seeing them on this new adventure. I look forward to seeing what she publishes next!!

8. Queens of the Fae series – M. Lynn & Melissa A. Craven

Books:
Fae’s Deception
Fae’s Defiance
Fae’s Destruction

This series was fun and intense and addicting. I couldn’t stop reading them, and I was so excited they wrote a spin-off series (Crimes of the Fae), which I still need to finish. I love the world these two authors have created. I can’t wait to see what they do next!!

7. The Aurora Cycle – Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman

Books out so far:
Aurora Rising
Aurora Burning

I’m not a big sci-fi reader. I can count the number of sci-fi books I’ve read on one hand, including these two. But this series made me want to read more! I’ve always loved sci-fi shows and movies (HUGE Whovian over here), but I never got into reading it until now. I plan on exploring this genre more in 2021, so if you have any suggestions to tide me over until the third book of this series releases, let me know below!

6. Behind the Count – Kimberly Readnour

Books out so far:
Swinging Strike
Behind the Count
Full Count

This whole series is great, but this second book… it checked so many boxes. Baseball romance? Check. Brother’s best friend? Check. Relatable for spoilery reasons? Check. It made me laugh and sob. I can’t wait for more books!!

(This book is much steamier than the others on this list.)

5. Love is a Dance Step – Michelle MacQueen

Okay, so this series releases next year, but I’m obsessed and you all need to read it when it’s out! All four books are fantastic, but this second one really just made my soul happy. I’ve wanted a dance book like this for so long, and it was as if Michelle read my mind and wrote the perfect book just for me. HIGHLY recommend!!

4. A Kingdom of Runes series – Audrey Grey

Books:
Oath Taker
Curse Breaker
King Maker
Light Singer

Once upon a time, I requested this ARC to review because it looked cool… I technically read the first two in 2019, but I read King Maker in 2020 and most of Light Singer (the reading slump hit at horrible time, but I’ll be finishing it ASAP). This was actually one of the first books I featured on this website. I have since read eight more of Aubrey’s books via audio and am dying for more. It was hard deciding which to include on the list. They could’ve easily all made it!!

(This series gets steamier with each book, more than most of the others on this list.)

3. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin – Roseanne A. Brown

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this debut book. The cover caught my attention and it sounded interesting, so I requested it to review for YA Books Central, and I am so glad I did!! It is truly incredible. The storytelling and world building are done so beautifully. I cannot wait for the next book!!

2. World Apart series – Robin D. Mahle

Books:
The Fractured Empire
The Tempest Sea
The Forgotten World
The Ever Falls

I’m low key obsessed with this series. The whole thing from start to finish captured my attention. The ending had me sobbing, which is always a clear indicator that it’s a new favorite. For an author to make me feel so attached to these characters that I full-on ugly cry when something happens to them… Also, the covers are incredible!!

1. The Hidden Warrior duology – M. Lynn

Books:
Dragon Rising
Dragon Rebellion

This duology is a Mulan retelling, and IT. IS. EVERYTHING. Dragon Rising was the first book I read of the year. It blew me away and set a really high bar for the others. The story is just… it’s amazing. It has everything I want in a retelling. The story we all know and love is there, but the world and plot are built up so much it feels original. And the characters are the best! I cannot recommend these books enough.
