Stephanie’s Review of “Winter Dreams: A Wicked Lovely Story” by Melissa Marr

By: Stephanie Wyatt

Winter Dreams tells the story of the King of the Summer Court finding the next girl who could be the fated Summer Queen and end the world’s eternal winter. This story was interesting because it is split between three points of view: Donia, the current Winter Girl, Keenan, the young Summer King, and Irial, King of the Dark Court. They all are interested in the role this new girl is destined to play. Donia is cursed to dissuade each girl from risking Winter’s cold to see if they are the fated Summer Queen.

She is cursed with eternal cold until the next foolish mortal girl takes the test. Keenan’s powers as King of the Summer Court are bound until he finds his fated queen. Irial is the one who set the curse on the young king. He also feels a strange connection to the next mortals’ family. Problem is Keenan and Donia are still in love. Keenan wants to give up his role as Summer King in order to be with Donia. He dreams of embracing his role as a prince of the Winter Court so he can be with her.

Donia and Keenan are one of my favorite couples in the series. I was excited to see more of their relationship. Irial is a very interesting character, so I am always curious to see his shenanigans. The curse has always intrigued me, so I was glad to learn more about it.

The pacing was good, and the points of view were distinct. The only aspect I didn’t like was that readers’ meet the next chosen mortal, but you don’t get to see any of her story. Readers discover her fate in Wicked Lovely, however, I would have liked to see some of her story in the book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It added more context to a world I love to explore. It’s 3/5 because I want to see more of the story play out. You can find Winter Dreams on Amazon here.
