Cait’s Review of “Tutoring the Player” by Rebecca Jenshak

Blurb

I have a type.
I love the good guy.
Responsible and stable. Safe.
So when a beer-drinking, quick-witted, tattooed hockey player asks me to tutor him, I’m suddenly thrust into the world of bad boys and bad decisions.
Jordan is a renowned player on campus.
He doesn’t take anything seriously, except hockey and partying.
But he gives me butterflies.

I’m a wallflower tutoring Valley University’s hottest player.

Review

This book… It was so, so good, and it had the potential to be a new favorite by Rebecca Jenshak… but it just didn’t get there for me because of one thing.

Third-act breakups are very hit or miss. I don’t particularly like them, but I don’t hate them as much as some people. It really depends on the story and how it’s handled. Without spoiling too much, I will just say this one wasn’t great. It felt forced and a little too dramatic; it didn’t really make sense why a certain character was reacting so strongly about things.

That being said, the entire rest of the book was wonderful. It was fun and light. Daisy and Jordan’s almost reluctant friendship was very entertaining. I couldn’t stop reading. The chemistry was great, as was the steam.

Daisy is very into historical romance; Jordan is a popular jock. They’re very different, but it works. And Jordan reading to her, watching the movies with her… it was perfect. There’s one part in particular where they’re discussing the different versions of Pride and Prejudice, and I was living for it. The 2005 version is one of my favorite movies of all time, so that was a fun scene for me. Especially when the hand flex was mentioned. It was gold.

There are a lot of side characters that had pretty good development too. It could’ve been a tad better, but I think it was intentional since they get their own stories. There was enough to be interested in what’s going to happen for them. There just wasn’t a lot of backstory for them or details to round them out. Again, it wasn’t bad by any means. It simply could’ve been a little better, in my opinion.

I’m really enjoying Jenshak’s books. This was another hit, and I’d still definitely recommend it. Especially if you’re a vibe reader. I immediately jumped into the second book in this series because I NEEDED to know what happened between Daisy’s cousin Violet and their neighbor Gavin.
