Stephanie’s Review of “Divine Rivals” by Rebecca Ross

By: Stephanie Wyatt

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross tells the story of a young woman, Iris Winnow, whose brother Forrest gets recruited to fight in a War between two gods, Dacre and Enva. He promises to write and tells her to stay in school. She is left to care for her mother, who turns to alcohol after her brother’s deployment. This forces Iris to drop out of school and get a job at a prestigious newspaper, the Oath Gazette, where she has to compete with another aspiring columnist–the rich, handsome, and talented, Roman Kitt. They become workplace rivals who love to get on each other’s nerves.

It has been four months without any letters from Forrest. So, Winnow writes him letters on her grandmother’s old typewriter that she gifted Iris when she was young. Iris slides these letters under the closet door she shared with Forrest before he left to fight in the war. It was how they used to share secret messages when they were young. Then, one night, she sees a letter slide under the door. However, it isn’t from her brother.

This book has everything I love: enemies to lovers, he falls first, found family, and fantasy elements. It also contains letters, news articles, and Mythology, which help not only develop the relationships in the book, but contribute to an amazing world. I am obsessed when authors include different types of writing in their books.

This book kept me on my toes. I was ready to sob my heart out at least four times, but I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. I am so glad I waited to read it because now I don’t have to wait for Ruthless Vows. I cannot wait to see how the story ends.

Overall, this book was a 5/5 star read for me. It had all of the elements of books I adore. It was NA, so there was a little spice, but nothing too explicit. If you love historical fiction, fantasy, and romance, I highly encourage you to go to your nearest bookstore and get this book. It’s also available on Kindle Unlimited with a subscription.
