Friday Favorites: Spooky Books

By: Stephanie Wyatt

Halloween was my favorite holiday growing up. I love mythical creatures and magic, so it makes sense. Here are a few of my favorite spooky books and why I love them.

Bloggers, don’t forget to add your list to the linky at the end!

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe

I love the symbolism. The image of the eye the narrator is haunted by is something I think about often. Edgar Allen Poe is also a weird guy in general, so I enjoy his work during Spooky Season

The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R Ward

This series has more stereotypical vampires. I needed that in the Twilight Era. They are a group that has to stop a species of ruthless vampires who just drain humans dry. The Brotherhood has to stop them before the humans exterminate all vampire kind. They are very spicy, have a lot of sexual content, and some dark themes as well. There’s also fated mates.

The Hush Hush Saga by Becca Fitzpatrick

This is a story about a young woman named Nora whose father was recently murdered. She meets a young man named Patch, and learns that there was a lot about her father that she didn’t know. The town has creepy vibes and people are constantly trying to possess and kill the other characters.

Tropes include: enemies to lovers, fallen angels, and morally gray characters

The House of Night Series by P. C. and Kristin Cast

This is a young adult series that tells the story of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old who is Marked and must go to the vampire school The House of Night to see if she will survive to become a grown-up Vampyr. The villains are pretty spooky and dark. It has more of a folklore vibe to traditional vampire lore.

Tropes: magical school, friends to lovers, mythology, vampires, powerful friend groups, fated mates, strong female main character.

Night World Vol. 1 by L.J. Smith

Night World has everything. They have stories about vampires and witches. They are closer to traditional takes on those in modern times. The other cool thing about Night World is there are 9 stories told across 4 volumes, so each volume has a part of the story. They have 9 books where each book is the full story so you don’t have to carry around giant books anymore.

Tropes include: family legacies, fated mates, family bonds, vampires, and witches
