Wren is used to being called a control freak. She doesn’t care; sticking to the list of rules she created for herself helps her navigate life. But when a cute guy named Asher walks through the door of her neighborhood coffee shop, the rulebook goes out the window.
Asher is cute, charming . . . and being catfished by his online crush. So Wren makes an uncharacteristically impulsive decision—she pretends to be the girl he’s waiting for to save him from embarrassment. Suddenly she’s fake-dating a boy she knows nothing about. And it’s . . . amazing.
It’s not long before Asher has her breaking even more of her own rules. But will he forgive her when he finds out she’s not who she says she is? Wren’s not so sure. . . . After all, rules exist for a reason.
Review
I adore Kasie West’s YA romances. They’re so light and fun, but also moving. This one was no exception.
I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I’d been wanting a break from heavy fantasy, so this was perfect. Wren and Asher were great together. I loved their growing friendship, despite her hiding the truth of who she was. They were really cute together, bringing out the best in one another.
That being said, it felt like this book was missing something. I’m not sure what, but it just didn’t hit the same as West’s other stories. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved reading it and recommend it to those who like this genre.
I think part of it was the side characters’ development. It was somewhat lacking. I kept thinking we’d get more details on them, but we just didn’t get a whole lot. Something about the pacing also felt off. Almost like parts were rushed. Individually, the scenes were fine. It’s more like larger parts didn’t flow well with each other. For example, without spoiling anything, something happens on the Fourth of July. On their own, the scenes were well written and such, but how it fit into the rest of the book felt off. Almost like it was randomly added as an after thought. It’s hard to explain. I think the book just needed fleshed out a bit more as a whole maybe.
As I mentioned though, it was still a very enjoyable read. It was sweet and light, with a bit of comedy and heartache sprinkled in appropriately. The characters were super loveable. I just wanted more of everything.
