Stephanie’s Review of “Wicked Lovely” by Melissa Marr

By: Stephanie Wyatt

Wicked Lovely is a YA novel that tells the story of how Aislinn Foy despite being warned to stay away from the Fae her entire life ended up being pursued by Keenan, the cursed King of The Summer Court, his ex-girlfriend Donna, and his mother Breia, Queen of the Winter Court who has had eternal winter over the land for the last few centuries.

Keenan has to seduce mortal women into touching a staff to see if they are his long-lost Queen to restore summer to the land. They can choose to serve his court as one of the Summer Girls who will be dependent on him to live, or they can risk winter flooding their veins and being forced to try and persuade the next mortal girl not to take the test.

This book has one of my favorite book boyfriends, Seth Morgan. He’s been friends with Aislinn for years, but he’s a few years older so even though they want to date. They are strictly friends for now. He has his trailer and creates iron sculptures so Aislinn is safe from fairies when she’s at his house.

I love this book because it has court intrigue, love, and jealousy. It’s not your typical Young Adult novel about the fae. There are five books in the series and they focus on different characters in the different Courts, but you always get hints about your favorites. Melissa Marr has also expanded the universe so I’m excited to learn more.

There are romantic scenes, but they fade to black. The characters are extremely relatable and funny. The lore is pretty traditional for the Fae. They cannot lie, are weak around iron, and love to torment mortals.

Overall, I give this book a 5/5 because I think about these characters often and it’s one of my favorite rereads because of how it messes with common YA romance tropes.

You can find the books on Amazon and most bookstores. Happy reading!
