Friday Favorites: Latinx Authors

By: Stephanie Wyatt

Happy Friday, everyone! Hispanic Heritage month starts on September 15th, so I’m going to talk about a few Hispanic authors that have caught my eye in recent years.

We have plenty of other cool lists like this one available here.

Bloggers, the linky to add yours is at the bottom!

Benjamin Allre Sàenz

He is the author of Dante and Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I read this for a class back in college, and I quickly understood why it’s so critically acclaimed. Dante and Aristotle are probably one of the best friends to lovers pairings I have read in a while. It takes you through their journey, and you can genuinely see how their relationship grows.

Isabel Allende

I learned about her in my high school Spanish class, and she has been on my TBR since then. She is the goddaughter of the first socialist Chilean president, Salvador Allende, and fled the country in 1975 to escape political arrest. Her books often discuss her past with the Chilean government and have elements of magical realism. She has also written the YA series City of Beasts. I am obsessed with letter stories, and she uses letters in her stories often.

Natalia Sylvester

I found her in a list of Best Latinx authors of 2022, and now I am definitely adding her book Breathe and Count Back From Ten to my TBR. The book tells the story of Veronica, a Peruvian teen with hip displaysia who auditions to be a mermaid at a theme park the summer before her senior year. I’m always looking for books with good disability representation.

Sonara Reyes

I found her in another list of Latinx authors of 2022. I was intrigued by her book The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School. I went to Catholic school for 12 years, and so I’m always curious to read other experiences in novels. It is also giving me slight enemies to lovers vibes, and those are my favorite.

Who are some of your favorite Latinx authors? Have you read any of these? Let us know in the comments.
