Friday Favorites: Genres

By: Cait Marie

Happy Friday! I thought I’d kick off the year by talking about my favorite genres to read. So, let me first ask, are you one to read a variety or do you stick with one or two genres? I primarily read two but enjoy more. Here are my favorites:

YA/NA Fantasy

Fantasy will always be my number one, especially upper young adult or new adult. I love all the world-building and fast pace that YA offers. These characters are usually trying to find their place in the world, which is relatable. The stories are typically character-based, and the plots are fun and intriguing, even if the same tropes are often used. It’s comforting.

Some of my favorite authors: M. Lynn, Melissa A. Craven, Robin D. Mahle, Elle Madison, Audrey Grey, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas, C. J. Redwine.

YA/NA Romance

My next most-read genre is definitely romance. I’ve been reading more new adult-adult romance the past few years, but I still read a lot of YA as well. Sometimes, I just really need a light, cute romance to counterbalance the heaviness of fantasy and real life.

Some of my favorite authors: Michelle MacQueen, Ann Maree Craven, Kimberly Readnour, Maggie Dallen, K. K. Allen, Emma Hart, Kasie West, Becky Albertalli, Adam Silvera, John Green.

YA Dystopian

I’m a sucker for dystopian, though I haven’t read a whole lot. There’s something about a revolution, banding together to fight for what’s right, that’s always called to me. I especially like when dystopian is mixed with other genres, like fantasy or sci-fi.

Some of my favorite authors: Becky Moynihan, Audrey Grey, Suzanne Collins, Kiera Cass.

YA/NA Historical Fantasy & Historical Romance

I’ve always loved history, especially European history. I go through phases where I obsess over certain time periods or historical events. For example, I can tell you way more about Pompeii than you probably care to know because it was my thing when I was like twelve. So, if you put one of my favorite genres within one of those obsessed times, I get even more excited.

Some of my favorite authors: Maggie Dallen, Cassandra Clare, Robin LaFevers, Kerri Maniscalco, Mackenzi Lee.

YA/NA Science Fiction

I actually haven’t read a lot of sci-fi, which is odd because I love the genre in TV and movies. It’s one I want to read more this year, especially since I have my own sci-fi fairytale retelling series planned. I really love when it’s mixed with fantasy as well.

Some of my favorite authors: Audrey Grey, Veronica Roth, Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff.

What are your favorite genres? Have any suggestions for me based on mine? Let me know!
