Friday Favorites: Magical Creatures

Magical creatures are my favorite part of fantasy; I love reading books where magical creatures exist. I feel like it adds an extra layer to a story if you see a mermaid having a coffee at the local coffee shop.

Here are some of my favorite magical creatures:

Merpeople

I did not specify mermaids because I always thought there should be a more gender neutral name for those who live under the sea. I had a teacher once who said that Disney did everything there was to do with merpeople because of Ariel so I have been on the hunt for books with merpeople ever since.

Dragons

Okay, I know everyone loves Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon, and I am no exception, but I also think it’s cool that dragons protect treasure or precious things. I think I will try to read Eragon by Christopher Paolini again this year. I have started it a few times, but I haven’t been able to get into it.

Pegasus

I love horses, so a horse that flies would complete my life. I think more people should write about them. They would be useful for travel and getting you out of sticky situations.

Werewolves

I was convinced that after the Twilight and Vampire Diaries craze, we would see a rise in books about werewolves. They are just another race of creatures that exist in a magical city. There are a few books like Nightshade by Andrea Cremer where werewolves are the focus, but they are few and far between.

Fae

I feel like I have read a lot of books about fae the past few years. I love the different ways their cold, unforgiving nature is portrayed. I love the concept of the Sight and being trapped in fae lands if you consume anything offered. I like seeing characters adjust to new lands and a new society.
