2019 Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

By: Cait Marie

Can you believe June is almost over?! Well, it is, which means it’s time for the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag! You can read 2018’s here.

I saw this done by Melanie over at Mel To The Any. The original tag was created by ReadLikeWildfire and Earl Grey Books!

I have read 37 books so far this year, and am almost done with several more since I read multiple books in different formats at the same time. My goal for the year is 130, so I’m very behind. Originally it was 100, but I thought it’d be fun to do 100 more than last year’s goal, which was 30. Basically, I am insane.

The majority of the books have been YA fantasy, with more contemporaries happening lately. Many are ebooks, as that’s how I’m sent ARCs and review copies most of the time. If you include all formats, I have bought/received at least 191 books this year (I’m not done going through things, and I think I missed a couple).

Alright, let’s jump in! I will not be allowing myself to use the same book more than once, otherwise I’d be talking about Red, White & Royal Blue the entire time. I’m also not counting re-reads.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2019:

The Red Scrolls of Magic – Cassandra Clare & Wesley Chu

I mean… did you expect a different answer? I finally got a Malec book!
Review here.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2019:

Defy Me – Tahereh Mafi

Just like last year, my favorite sequel is part of the Shatter Me series. These books continue to blow my mind!
Review here.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to:

Noble Thief – M. Lynn

I loved Golden Curse, and I cannot wait to get to this book. It’s a Robin Hood retelling! Robin Hood has always been my favorite story (hence, my own book!).

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year:

These Divided Shores – Sara Raasch

This one was tough, but I have to go with the sequel to These Rebel Waves. I am so anxious for more after that ending!
Review here.

5. Biggest disappointment:

NONE! I have loved all the books so far.

6. Biggest surprise:

The F Word – Michelle MacQueen & Ann Maree Craven

Like I said in my review, I was nervous about reading this book because of the topics it deals with, but I absolutely loved it!
Review here.

7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you):

Red, White & Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston

I’m not even done with this book, but I knew within two pages it was going to be a new favorite. It’s hilarious and adorable and I love it with all my heart!

8. Newest fictional crush:

Ethan Tanaka from
The Princess and the Fangirl – Ashley Poston

Ethan is the nerdy best friend in this book, and he makes me so happy. He’s snarky and loyal, basically amazing. I didn’t want the book to end because I wanted more of him!

9. Newest favorite character:

Literally everyone from
A Curse So Dark and Lonely – Brigid Kemmerer

Harper, Rhen, and “Scary Grey” are just perfect and I love them!

10. Book that made you cry:

The Blood Curse – C. J. Redwine

This book was just amazing. It’s tied for favorite of the year so far. The ending was a bit emotional and I’m pretty sure I cried a bit. SO. GOOD.
Review here.

11. Book that made you happy:

On the Fence – Kasie West

This book is adorable!! I loved it and it made me so happy inside. I’ve listened to four of her audiobooks this month because they’re all like that.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received):

Bloodleaf – Crystal Smith

This picture doesn’t do it justice. The silver swirls are shiny on the physical copy, and the details are beautiful. It’s gorgeous!
Review here.

13. What book do you need to read by the end of the year?:

The Cruel Prince – Holly Black

Yes, this was on my list last year too. No, I still haven’t read it. Yes, I have The Wicked King as well. I have zero excuses. I know I’m going to love it, I just haven’t read it yet.

14. Favorite book community member:

I may have started Functionally Fictional last year, but I didn’t really get involved in the community and start trying until this year, and I’ve met so many wonderful people. I can’t possibly pick one favorite!

Have you read any of these books? What are some of your favorites so far in 2019? Let me know!

  1. I agreed with a lot of this *hides face* … especially the parts about this year’s list being the same as last year’s lol. The Cruel Prince was a bit of a disappointment for me, unfortunately, but I hope you enjoy it! I also REALLY NEED to read the Red, White and Royal Blue!

  2. Ahh some great books here! I can’t wait to finally get around to reading The Red Scrolls of Magic!!! I’m also super intrigued about Red, White and Blue, I’ve heard lots of good things. I hope you love The Cruel Prince when you get around to it, The Wicked King was my favourite sequel so far this year.
