TBR Tuesday: 2019 O.W.L.s Magical Readathon

By: Cait Marie

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that I’d be participating in the O.W.L.’s Magical Readathon throughout April, created and hosted over on Book Roast’s YouTube channel. Basically, you pick a Harry Potter-themed career, and then you follow the required courses based on that career. The courses/subjects are different categories of books, and the challenges range from (I believe) 3-12 books, so you pick what works best for you. For more information and all the details on the different challenges, check out her video announcement here!

Personally, I have decided to go for Hogwarts Professor. In order to pass my O.W.L.s, I must complete the following:

Personally, I have decided to go for Hogwarts Professor. In order to pass my O.W.L.s, I must complete the following:

  • A subject I wish to teach
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts
  • And 5 additional subjects of my choice

With 7 books total, I feel like this career is the best choice for me. It’s close to my average number of books per month, plus I can choose a majority of the subjects, so that gives me some flexibility. Again, each of the subjects is a different theme or type of book. For example, D.A.D.A. is Reducto–A title that starts with “R.” All of the subjects and info can be found in the PDFs below the video.

Now, because I read based on mood usually, I have picked a couple books for most of the subjects in case I change my mind halfway through the month. I’ve also picked a backup subject because who knows what I’ll want to read in three weeks?

Without further ado, here’s my Magical Readathon TBR:

A Subject I Wish To Teach:
Astronomy (“Star” in the title)

The Star-Touched Queen
– Roshani Choksi

The Sun is Also a Star
– Nicola Yoon

Defense Against the Dark Arts (Reducto: A title that starts with an “R”)

The Red Scrolls of Magic
– Cassandra Clare

I mean, duh. This is my most anticipated book of the year. I’m reading it next month regardless. It just so happened to fit a subject!

5 Additional Subjects of My Choice:
Ancient Runes (Retelling)

Thief of Cahraman
– Lucy Tempest

Retellings are my favorite, but I’ve yet to read an Aladdin one. I got a review copy of this from Netgalley, so I’m super excited to read it.

Pride
– Ibi Zoboi

A friend sent me this in December and I still haven’t read it…

The Shadow Queen
– C. J. Redwine

I’m re-reading this regardless because it’s one of the books for my book club in April, but it fits here just in case I don’t get to one of the others.

Arithmancy (Work written by more than one author)

The Iron Trial
– Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

I’ve technically already started this, but didn’t get far shhh…

Zenith
– Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings

I’ve been wanting to get more into sci-fi, so I thought this might be a good start!

Divination (Set in the future)

Illuminae
– Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I still haven’t read this. After years and years of hearing how great it is, I’m finally going to start it!

Muggle Studies (Contemporary)

The Princess and the Fangirl
– Ashley Poston

I’m reading this regardless. I loved Geekerella and cannot wait for this book!

The Bet Between Us
– B.L. Moore

I got a review copy of this from Netgalley, so I really need to read it…

Potions (Next ingredient: Sequel)

Defy Me
– Tahereh Mafi

Words cannot adequately describe how badly I need this book. It’s killing me. April 2 can’t get here quick enough!

Alternative Subject:
Transfiguration (Sprayed edges or red cover)

The Wrath and the Dawn
– Renee Ahdieh

This can also fit in the retelling category. It’s been on my TBR forever!!

Ruby Red
– Kerstin Gier

A Court of Thorns and Roses
– Sarah J. Maas

Just in case, I thought I’d add one I already know I love.

Are you participating? What career did you choose? Have you read these books? Let me know below!

And tell me which house you are! I’m a Hufflepuff, not that surprises anyone probably.
